Tickets: D&D Character Creation Workshop

A thing we usually never have time to over in our monthly TTRPG events is how to actually make a D&D 5e character from scratch, so here’s an attempt at addressing that!

Who this is for

  • Players to new to TTRPGs like D&D, and would like to learn how to make a character.
  • Writers and other creative people who may find some inspiration from the rich world of characters and ideas that are in Dungeons & Dragons
  • People who have no idea about D&D and tabletop games but are open to spending two hours to see what it is all about.

What to expect

  • A step-by-step approach to creating a Dungeons & Dragons character, made for people who are totally new to D&D or have played but never made a character from scratch.
  • We’ll provide blank character sheets, printed handouts, dice, and other tools needed to participate
  • My (@karthikb351) opinionated tools & tips on how to go about making fun quirks, personalities, and backstories (which is useful for making NPCs too).
  • You will have a group of DMs and other players to bounce ideas off of during the workshop
  • Access to the physical books and supplements (Player’s Handbook, Xanathar’s Guide to Everything, Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, and more!)

Takeaways

  • A fully playable Dungeons & Dragons 5e character sheet at 3rd-5th level
  • An understanding of the game’s basic rules
  • My (@karthikb351) opinionated views on what makes for “good” characters from a DM’s perspective. Hopefully not very controversial :eyes:.

What to not expect

  • This is not a comprehensive look at every option available in D&D 5e.
  • This is restricted only to D&D 5e to keep it simple, but several of the ideas are applicable across other TTRPG games.

This is also a great tie-in to @mithunbalraj’s Solo-play / DM-less TTRPG workshop which is scheduled immediately after. You can take the character you made from this into that one!

Some of the resources mentioned/used during this workshop:

D&D Character Sheet

The most user-friendly solution to building a character is to use D&D Beyond - https://www.dndbeyond.com/

Especially for the basic set, which is free. You’ll have to pay for the Player’s Handbook if you want to use it to make all the core races and classes.

For a free version what includes the Player’s Handbook races and classes, you can check out: 5e Character Generator

Starter set characters

The handouts of pregenerated characters are from the official starter set.

RPG Personality

A modular system for how to think about character personalities, broken down as Primary Motivators, Emotional Disposition, and Core Traits.

Character Quirks

A table of quirks for characters that can be used for inspiration.

Honestly there are dozens of these available, you can just Google “RPG character quirks table/generator” and you’ll get many. Below is the one used during the workshop.
